Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM or enlarged heart)is a serious heart condition that is the leading cause of sudden cardiac death in young athletes. Approximately 1 in 500 student athletes are affected by Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, and it rarely has any identifiable symptoms. Just a few years ago, two Central Texas students died of sudden cardiac arrest. One was playing soccer; the other was practicing for a national band competition. The students' deaths were caused by Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy.

HCM has few recognizable signs and symptoms and often goes undetected. If your athlete has a history of suddenly fainting or collapsing during exercise, has a family history of cardiac related death prior to age 50, or has high blood pressure, please seek evaluation for this condition.

We recommend that because this condition usually does not present with the above symptoms and is undetectable by the standard physical that every athlete go to one of the screening dates offered by the Championship Hearts Foundation.

HCM may be diagnosed with an echocardiogram (ECHO), a non-invasive picture of the heart. A conventional ECHO in an office with a cardiologist is expensive and usually not covered by most insurance plans. Using a "2-minute" ECHO technique, the screening may be done for a fraction of the cost. The screening is offered at no charge to any Central Texas high school athlete regardless of insurance. Screenings are first come, first served - no appointments.

Championship Hearts Student Athlete Screening In order to participate in CHAMPIONSHIP HEARTS Screening, all students MUST have the Parent Waiver completed and signed by their parent or guardian. Please download, print, and complete the two forms from the their website and bring them to your screening. No appointment is necessary. The screenings are free; however a suggested donation of $15.00 is appreciated. Monies received through this program will fund future screenings and other Foundation projects.
