History of Becker Library Our library is named in honor of Allen and Elizabeth Becker. Allen Becker, PhD., served as headmaster of St. Stephen’s from 1957 to 1973, during which time the school became racially integrated. The late Elizabeth Becker was a math teacher at St. Stephen’s during that time.
At St. Stephen's and throughout his career in education, Allen Becker consistently raised the quality and standards of academic programs. His strong sense of social equity consistently led him to advocate for diversity in the student body and faculty. After leaving St. Stephen's, Becker served as head at St. Andrew's School in Jackson, Miss., and as head at St. Catherine's School for girls in Richmond, Va. In his retirement, Becker returned to Austin, where he has served as a trustee and interim head of St. James' Episcopal School. |
