JUNE 11-15 9-12am ages 5-11 Fish Aquarium Sculpture We begin with a cardboard box, cut out the sides, and spend the week adding, sculpting coloring and building to create an underwater wonderland. The final creation will include transparency, a background, many fish and sea creatures, seaweed and starfish. Every day we will gather together, look through pictures, talk and learn a new way to make a part of our sculpture. This collaboration teaches us to work as a group as well as taking small steps to build something beautiful. Expect your child to take home a gorgeous diorama on Friday. Fish storybooks will abound. 1-4pm ages 10 and up Large Scale Sculptural Portraits (or just Big Heads?) From Easter Island to Angkor Watt, through the Olmecs and the Inuit---oversized faces have gazed, grimaced, and grinned down upon passers by. We will continue this noble tradition by making a giant wearable head, an incredible self-portrait painting and a wall mask out of natural objects. Get ready to glue, tie, paint, draw, assemble, nail, staple, decorate, and forage. By the end of the week, you will know many new techniques for building sculpture and painting larger scale images. We will be reviewing large-scale artworks from the people mentioned above, plus the Nazca Lines, the Masks of Gineau-Bissau, and modern big head masters like Ron Mueck and Blu. This is a great class for artists, crafters, and inventors. JUNE 18-22 9-12am ages 5-11 Picasso and Calder After looking at a series of artworks by these seminal artists, we will embark on making art of our own, using some of the same processes they used. We will look at Picasso’s beautiful posters made in Valla Uris, his flower people and assemblage sculptures in addition to Alexander Calder’s tri-color paintings, mobiles and wire sculptures. We will have a relaxing creative week discussing what we like and don’t like, hear relevant stories, and view Calder’s amazing circus video to boot! 1-4pm ages 10 and up Rich painting through layering: Texture, relief and multiples. Using frottage, collage, and assemblage, we will increase the depth of our painting –literally, by adding to the surface, scraping, and collaging to enhance our images. We will make three paintings: a landscape, a still life, and a portrait, and let our creativity reign. Come ready to use natural and commercial art materials, recycled objects and paint. For experienced and unsure artists alike- everyone shines in this class. For more information contact lorr@sstx.org LACROSSE
